Whenever you sleep, you start levitating, slowly drifting upward over the course of the night until you come to rest on the ceiling after a couple of hours

Every day at precisely noon a (CFL style) light bulb appears and starts orbiting your head. If left alone the bulbs accumulate each day until there are many bulbs orbiting your head. A bulb can easily be grabbed and pulled from its orbit at which point there is nothing special about it.

After discussing this with someone I think that you must drift down when you wake up (quickly, but slow enough to not be harmed). Otherwise its pretty bad.

You could still drift over spikes, but at least you don't start each day with a fall.

It also makes it more feasible to sleep outside. You might still drift away and get lost, but at least you won't fall from the stratosphere if you pass out for the night.

Well this is a well thought out question. jeez.

Is the light bulb illuminated somehow? Or is it just an ordinary light bulb floating there?

I guess I could install straps on my bed.

Its ordinary. Not lit. Although, if it was, that would be cool. :)

Even a ordinary bulb may be useful. CFL bulbs cost about $15 at the store. You can probably at least sell them for $10. So $10/day - thats $300/month. Not enough to live on, but it would certainly top up whatever you make at your job nicely! :)
